Bio

In late 1994 Heather stumbled across an Irish pub session in Massachusetts, and was hooked.

Since then she has studied Irish fiddle at a number of summer and winter schools in both Ireland and the U.S. Whenever she can, she plays at sessions in large cities with strong Irish music scenes where she can soak up the influence of musicians who have grown up in the tradition.

She has a very traditional approach to the music, and plays an unusually wide variety of tunes - not only reels and jigs but also polkas and slides, slip jigs and hornpipes. She particularly enjoys the dance music of the Sliabh Luachra region and the relaxed pace of County Clare.

In addition to Irish music, she has also played (and sung) music from Brittany and elsewhere in France (lately with Bourrée Texane); explored Scottish, Cajun, and Scandinavian music; and played early music from medieval to baroque on violin, rebec, vielle, and crumhorn, most recently with the Istanpitta medieval ensemble and the Texas Early Music Project. She is also a fine song accompanist and harmony singer, working with Sarah Dinan for two years and occasionally with Ed Miller and Jed Marum.

In Austin she performed primarily with the duo Gilmer & Moore and the "mostly French" band Bourrée Texane.. She has also given Irish fiddle workshops and master classes at such venues as Texas Tech and the North Texas Irish Festival, and has been heard on KUT's Folkways and Eklektikos radio programs. She has played for Irish, Breton, contradance, and Renaissance dance demonstrations and workshops, has provided music for Irish dance competition, has provided live music for the Irish Dance Center's classes in Austin, and has on occasion taught Breton dancing. She currently lives in Tampa, FL.
